Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit - Everything You Need to Know

Magic's next trip to Middle-earth starts at the very beginning — not the War of the Ring, but Bilbo Baggins' original adventure from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain. The Hobbit releases on August 14, 2026, with prerelease events running now through August 13 and an MTG Arena launch on August 11.

The story

The set follows Bilbo, Gandalf, and Thorin's company of Dwarves on the road to reclaim their homeland from Smaug — Trolls, riddles in the dark, and a dragon's hoard included. Wizards has leaned hard into staying faithful to the book itself here, rather than pulling from the wider trilogy, so expect a lighter, more adventure-driven tone than the earlier Lord of the Rings set.

The headline mechanic: Adventure

The Hobbit brings back Adventure, a mechanic Magic players will recognize from Throne of Eldraine — each Adventure card has two halves on one card: a spell you can cast first, followed by a creature you can cast later (or vice versa). It's a natural fit here, since the whole book is essentially one long chain of individual adventures, and cards like Bilbo, Luckwearer // Burglar's Plot and An Unexpected Party // At the Door tell small pieces of the story across their two halves. Mechanically, it's also just strong value — two spells worth of card advantage from a single card.

Cards worth knowing before you open packs

• Smaug, the Magnificent — the set's marquee mythic, a Treasure-fueled Dragon. A special gleaming gold foil version exists too, limited to roughly 500 English copies pulled from Collector Boosters.
• Bilbo — appears at both mythic and uncommon rarity, built around card advantage, Treasures, and evasion. Likely to see real Commander play given how well that fits the "clever burglar" fantasy.
• Thorin, Mountain-king — the Dwarf payoff players have been waiting for, expected to anchor Dwarf-tribal Commander decks.
• The Arkenstone — a legendary artifact and one of the set's chase mythics.
• The One Ring — returns as a Box Topper, reprinted in new borderless alt-art pulled straight from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth.

Beyond the individual cards, the set brings a few distinctive visual treatments: Dragon Hoard frames, cards with Dwarven script, "book cover" frames styled after the novel itself, borderless classic-artist cards, and full-art basic lands depicting the Shire across its changing seasons.
