Hobbit Scene Box: Treasures of Smaug vs Crack the Plates
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit has two Scene Boxes, Crack the Plates and Treasures of Smaug. They contain the same items, but each recreates a different moment from the book and includes different cards. This guide covers what is in the boxes, the cards that matter, and which one to buy.
What's in each Scene Box
Both boxes have the same contents:
- 3 Play Boosters from The Hobbit
- 6 borderless foil scene cards that join together into one large illustration, all playable in your deck
- 6 matching art-only cards with no game text, made for display
- 1 display easel
The difference is the scene and the six scene cards, so the choice comes down to the story moment you prefer and the cards you want to play.
Crack the Plates: the dinner at Bag End
This box recreates one of the best-known early scenes in the book: thirteen Dwarves and a Wizard turn up uninvited at Bilbo's home and make a mess of his dishes. The artwork is by Dmitry Burmak. The six scene cards are mostly Dwarf creatures: five legendary Dwarves and one artifact.
- Thorin, King of Durin's Folk: a Boros Dwarf commander that gives your deck access to most Dwarves, makes Treasure tokens, and can boost power early
- Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator: makes a Treasure whenever you make Food, which is a good payoff for Food decks
- Ori, Plate Stacker: a 7-mana white card that breaks your opponents' plates, spares yours, and gains you life
Best for: Dwarf decks, Boros decks, Food decks, and anyone who likes the funny, chaotic side of the book.
Treasures of Smaug: Bilbo meets the dragon
This box shows Bilbo inside the Lonely Mountain, in front of the dragon and the Erebor treasure hoard, where he has to talk his way out of a fiery confrontation. The artwork is by Marta Nael. Compared with Crack the Plates, the cards are less about creatures and more about treasure and artifacts.
- Smaug, the Impenetrable: an indestructible Dragon that makes lots of Treasure tokens, which suits commander decks built around mass damage because Smaug survives it
- Bilbo's Burglaring: takes an artifact from each opponent for one mana less than Blatant Thievery, so it can steal mana rocks and bigger prizes
- Necklace of Girion: a mana rock that adds +1/+1 counters, best in green decks with counters or landfall
Best for: Treasure decks, artifact theft, mass-damage commanders, green counters decks, and anyone who wants the dragon on their shelf.

Which one should you buy?
- You play Dwarves, Food, or a Boros deck: Crack the Plates.
- You play Treasure, artifact theft, or green counters, or you want a dragon commander: Treasures of Smaug.
- You want the best display: pick the scene you like most, or buy both and show the two scenes side by side.
- You are buying a gift: Treasures of Smaug is the more dramatic scene, and Crack the Plates is the more fun one.
The scene cards are foil and playable, so sleeve the ones you want to play and keep the art-only cards and the rest of the set on the easel.
